The Let’s Read Campaign began in 2007 with the aim of promoting the love of reading to children in Oman. We set up playrooms in hospitals and support reading initiatives in schools.
In 2013, thanks to the help of the Women’s Guild of Oman, we were able to purchase and convert a bus into a mobile library. Maktabati, Oman’s first mobile library, now tours around Oman’s interior, visiting schools, fairs and festivals, giving children access to good quality children’s books; fact and fiction, in both Arabic and English, and giving children the opportunity to develop a love of reading.
The mobile library is in great demand and the children get very excited when the bus arrives in the school playground. Last year Maktabati distributed 21,840 books to children across the country.
As part of our campaign, we hold an annual Children’s Writing Competition. The winning stories have been published in three books, Tales with a Twist, Stories from Oman and My Home Town.
The Let’s Read Book Shop opened its door in November 2014. It is Oman’s first charity book shop, located upstairs in the Al Qurum Complex (former CCC). All the books are donated and the shop is run by volunteers. The bookshop gives adults and children the opportunity to choose from a great selection of books and to purchase books at a reasonable price. All proceeds of sales help us to buy Arabic children’s books for Maktabati, Oman’s first mobile library.
We also hold a monthly book sale on the last Saturday of each month and relying on help from volunteers and providing high school students with an opportunity to participate in community service.
We are always in need of ideas, help and donations. Please call 99314230 if you would like to get involved.
